Finding a notary in Italy
Italian notaries are government-appointed officers who witness the signing of documents in order to make them legally valid, and certify documents whenever such a verification is required by the power of law. The distribution of notaries in Italy is divided into 91 districts. The territorial scope of each district coincides by law with the jurisdiction of the corresponding court. Districts in which fewer than fifteen notaries operate can be combined with another neighboring district to form a single Notary Council. Finding a notary can be the key to successfully closing a deal in compliance with all legal prerequisites. The following tool leads to the “Find a notary” section of the official page of the Consiglio Nazionale del Notariato (The National Council of Notaries) – https://www.notariato.it/en/trova-notaio . Following Art. 3 of Decree No.137 of August 7, 2012 of the President of the Republic, the national register of notaries was established. The registry also contains annotations of the disciplinary measures adopted against each notary, which enables prospective clients to do research on specific notaries, and their work, before deciding whom to work with. The search engine is really quite simple – all one needs to do is click on the “Select region or province” button and set the zone, in relation to which the notary search is performed. The search can then be narrowed down to a specific location. Once a given notary is selected, the website offers the possibility to check their address, phone number, e-mail address, website and professional information.
European Directory of Notaries
Alternatively one may use the European Directory of Notaries tool. This is an official website, whose creation was funded by a programme for Justice of the European Union. Once again it provides users with the option to search for a notary on the base of a selected location. Compared to the Notariato.it web page, the perks of the European Directory of Notaries is that it allows prospective clients to choose the language they wish the notary to be fluent in, which makes it an especially useful database for non-italian speakers. It is, in fact, a means to facilitate smooth communication, without the need of engaging a translator and incurring in additional expenses.
